There is a recent report that reveals that a certificate authority company in the Netherlands was the victim of a security breach and is the second such major company to have been such a victim in recent years. The breach has meant that the company has suspended its issuance of digital certificates and this calls into question the authentication software utilized in such circumstances. The company has suggested that all of the current certificates that are in use are valid and secure, but it's difficult to consider what the company has to say given it is the second company to have been hacked.
