Even for small get-togethers it can take a bit of time to get the whole thing planned and creating the party plan too close to when the party is slated to happen can cause problems not only for getting the last details of the party planning settled but also for getting the word out to visitors about the event itself. Allowing about a month for the planning of a small birthday party is probably sufficient, but planning the event just a few weeks in advance can be problematic if any special venues need to be chosen before the birth date arrives.
